At the time of this recording, we are experiencing an everchanging landscape regarding immigration enforcement and activities in Minnesota. In recent days, we've learned of the draw down of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota. And this comes as positive news. And yet, my heart breaks over the death of two people in the ongoing clashes between US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and protesters. And while to date these incidents have not occurred in Woodbury, I want to recognize that federal immigration enforcement activity is creating fear and anxiety for many in our community. For decades, previous city councils and staff have worked tirelessly with purpose and compassion to make Woodbury a safe, welcoming, and inclusive place to live for our residents. As a result, we have been recognized several times for being one of the best cities in the state in the entire country to live, work, learn, recreate, and raise a family. We have received hundreds of emails and phone calls and appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. This issue has become a top priority for our staff in recent weeks and we sought to understand the federal activity going on in our community and the impact it is having on our residents. It's important to note that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been in Minnesota for decades working to deport undocumented people. However, it feels different now for many reasons. and some of the reports we've been seeing and hearing about ICE operations in Minnesota have been concerning. Please know we will continue to work with all of our partners, county, state, and federal officials to advocate for the rights of our valued citizens, including those in our immigrant communities during this challenging time. Without question, this issue is changing day by day, and it's critical that we provide transparent updates to residents and businesses within the community. We have established an immigration resources FAQ webpage at woodburym.gov and I encourage everyone to turn to this resource as a trusted source of information straight from the city. Now, I'd like to share a few updates on immigration enforcement and inform you about additional resources as the situation continues to evolve. A news report in late December indicated Woodbury may be included among potential locations for a future US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detention facility. Since that report, residents have contacted the city with concerns, and many have expressed strong opposition to a facility of this nature. On January 14th, city staff verbally confirmed that the property located at 11435 Hudson Road is not being sold or leased to the federal government or agents acting on their behalf. Since that time, we have received written confirmation from both representatives of the building and agents working on behalf of the federal government that the building will no longer be pursued for a detainment facility. This news is the culmination of many efforts of Woodbury City staff to work every angle to identify the various parties involved in this plan. We were fortunate to put an end to the possibility of this facility in our community through a collaboration, communication, and a firm commitment to ensuring Woodbury remains a welcoming and inclusive community. In these hard times, I challenge all of us to speak and act respectfully, listen and seek to understand. Individually and collectively, we should call for transparency from our state and federal governments. We should call for Congress to set aside its partisan rhetoric and act to create systemic change to our citizenship process. I ask that we offer our best selves to each other and our neighbors, lower the level of discord, and move ahead with healing our country.
